Perfect nighttime skin care routine in 4 steps

  • Sol Rivero

We’ve told you before about how to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful with an anti-aging morning routine, but if you want to accentuate your skin’s beauty you also need to treat it well during the night. Today, we give you the perfect nighttime skin care routine you can achieve in 4 steps.

Nighttime skin care routine – Step #1: Remove makeup and impurities

The first and most important step of a perfect nighttime skin routine consists in eliminating every trace of dirt from your face. Begin by using a moist toilette or makeup wipe, preferably with aloe. Remove every trace of makeup by softly pressing it to every inch of your skin. Then, use a cleanser appropriate adjusted to your skin type. Use only a small amount of it, rub it with circular motions on your skin, and use lukewarm water to rinse it.

Even after using a wipe and a cleanser, it might not be enough to properly wash your face. Place a small amount of oil or Vaseline on a cotton pad, and use it to remove the makeup that might stick on your eyelids, eyelashes and creases of your face.

Nighttime skin care routine – Step #2: Treat your skin

The next step consists in rejuvenating your skin and giving the treatment it needs to stay young and fresh. Begin by exfoliating your skin to get rid of the dead skin cells, using a gentle exfoliator. However, don’t repeat this step more than two or three times a week, since exfoliation is a harsh process that can make your skin dry.

To complete the treatment, apply a serum or oil according to what your skin needs: rejuvenating, hydrating or collagen boosting elements can help your face look beautiful and fresh in the morning, and applying them daily will enhance its effects. Also, if you suffer from breakouts or dry skin, apply products against it during this step.

Nighttime skin care routine – Step #3: Tone and moisturize

To finish the routine, it’s very important to help your skin regain its protective oils and obtain the elements it needs to remain healthy and beautiful. Begin by applying a toner appropriate to your skin type so you can remove all remaining excess of makeup or cleanser on your face. If you have normal or dry skin, avoid toners with alcohol, since it can increase the dryness.

Once you’re done with the cleansing and treatment, apply a good moisturizer to your skin, so you can help your face recover the oils it lost during the previous steps of your nighttime routine. Look for moisturizers with anti-oxidants, vitamins C and E, and retinol. These elements help your skin by renewing it and repairing its damages, as well as fighting against marks and loss of elasticity.

You should also make sure you apply a moisturizer on the parts of your body which can get dry easily, such as your heels, knees and elbows.

Nighttime skin care routine – Step #4: Sleep properly

Finally, for your nighttime skin care routine to be successful, you must make sure you sleep appropriately, since your skin cells will repair during the night. To achieve it, use pillowcases with soft materials that won’t scratch or pull your skin, like silk. Also, avoid sleeping with your face against the pillow and try to sleep on your back instead, to avoid developing wrinkles or scratching your skin.

Make sure you get a full eight hours of sleep, since sleep deprivation not only damages your brain cells, but also accelerates the your skin’s aging process, as well as affecting its elasticity. If needed, sleep with a humidifier on to help your skin stay hydrated during the night.
