Makeup 101: eye makeup for your eye shape

  • Sol Rivero

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, which is why most women love bringing them out with some elegant eyeliner and a fun eye shadow. We’ve told you before what’s the best eye shadow for your eye color, and today we take a look at the best eye makeup for your eye shape in our guide of makeup 101.

Grab a mirror and your makeup implements, and let’s begin!

Eye makeup for deep set eyes

If you have a prominent brow bone, your eyes seem to be deep inside your skull and there’s a noticeable crease above it, then you have deep set eyes. The brow bone gives your eye a natural eye shadow, so you should concentrate in highlighting your lower lid.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use a light eye shadow on your brow bone.
  • Use a darker eye shadow on the outer corners of your eyes until just below the creases.
  • Highlight the lower lid by drawing a line using eye shadow or eye liner.
  • Curl your eyelashes upwards with waterproof mascara.

Eye makeup for hooded eyes

If, like deep set eyes, you have a prominent brow bone, but the crease is barely noticeable due to a layer of skin, then you have hooded eyes. Since your eyes probably look very small, you’ll have to create the illusion of volume with makeup.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use a dark eye shadow at the outer corners of your eyes, and blur it upwards.
  • Use eyeliner on your top lid to enlarge your eyes.
  • Curl the eyelashes of your outer corners upwards.

Eye makeup for monolid eyes

If your brow bone isn’t prominent and you have almost no crease, or even no crease at all, then you have monolid eyes. For this eye shape, you’ll have to create the illusion of volume and enlarge your eyes with makeup.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use dark eye shadow above your eye and blur it upwards, just below your eyebrows.
  • Use a shimmery eye shadow at the center of the space between your eyebrows and your eye.
  • Use a thick line of eyeliner on your top lip.
  • Curl the eyelashes of your outer corners upwards.

Eye makeup for almond-shaped or upturned eyes

If the outer corner of your eyes point upwards, then you have almond-shaped or upturned eyes. This is the most sought-after eye shape, and it’s perfect for a sultry smoky eye.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use a lighter eye shadow on the center of the eye, without touching your brow bone.
  • Apply a darker shade at the outer corners and blur it slightly upward.
  • Apply eyeliner or eye shadow on the outer corner of your lower lid to create balance.
  • Curl your eyelashes and apply mascara.

Eye makeup for downturned eyes

If the outer corners of your eyes point downwards, then you have downturned eyes. This shape is perfect for “cat eyes” which lift up the eyes.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Apply eye shadow to your upper lid and blur it upwards on the outer corners.
  • Apply eye liner to your upper and lower lids, and extend the line so it points upwards.
  • Curl your outer eyelashes upwards with black mascara.

Eye makeup for wide set eyes

If there’s a large space between your eyes, then you have wide set eyes. Since your eyes are apart, you’ll have to create the illusion of proximity.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use eye shadow on your upper lid, but avoid the skin on your brow bone.
  • Apply eye liner on your upper and lower lids, as close to the bridge of your nose as possible.
  • Curl the eyelashes on the outer corners and the center of your eye towards your nose.

Eye makeup for close set eyes

If the gap between your eyes is considerably small, then you have close set eyes. Unlike wide set eyes, you’ll have to create the illusion of space between your eyes.

For the perfect eye makeup for your eye shape:

  • Use light eye shadow on the inner corners of your eyes.
  • Use dark eye shadow on the outer corner of your eyes and extend it up and outwards.
  • Apply eye liner from the center of your eyelids towards the outer corners.
  • Curl your eyelashes up and outwards.
