Tips for healthy hair

Hair is one of women’s most popular natural accessories, but many of our daily activities and habits are actually damaging it. That’s why today we bring you a few tips so you can have beautiful and healthy hair.

Tip for healthy hair #6: Brush your hair

Were you one of those girls whose mothers told them to brush their hair a hundred times? Turns out there’s a reason for that! Brushing your hair properly extends the natural protective oils of your hair from the top to your head to the ends of your locks. This makes your hair shinier, more manageable and stronger. To avoid tangles and breakage, begin from the bottom of your hair and make your way to the top, then, brush it again from top to bottom.

It’s recommended you use hairbrushes with flexible bristles instead of combs or plastic hairbrushes. These items are great for detangling your hair and distributing the natural oils of your hair. However, make sure they have the same length, for otherwise it could pull and break your hair.

Tip for healthy hair #5: Don’t manipulate wet hair

Do you tend to blow-dry, brush, iron or tie your hair up when it’s wet? Don’t do it anymore! After a shower, your hair is weaker and more vulnerable to breakage. Pulling it, twisting it or exposing it to warmth, makes it dry, producing frizz and dullness. Instead, let it loose, detangle it with a wide-toothed comb, and consider applying a healing cream or natural oil to seal the moisture.

Tip for healthy hair #4: Use oils

Oils are your hair’s best friends. Every day we expose our hair to the inclement conditions of weather and smog, and we constantly attack it with harsh chemicals, we pull it while combing it, or tie it in complex hairdos. On the long run, these habits are harmful for your hair, which is why it’s recommended to use natural oils such as castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil and similar products to help it heal.

Once a week, heat up a small amount of your favorite oil and cover your hair from the roots to the ends with it. Let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, and then rinse it out with lukewarm water. You can also place a couple of drops from your favorite oil on your hair every couple of days. This will help you fight frizz and improve the production of your hair’s natural oil.

Tip for healthy hair #3: Avoid complex hairstyles

Braids, buns, ponytails, updos…they look great and are perfect for making you look unique. But using these type of hairstyles can be counterproductive for the health of your hair. Pulling or tying your hair too tightly contributes with its breakage and the emergence of problems such as alopecia. Opt for loose hairstyles: wear your hair down or tie it loosely.

Tip for healthy hair #2: Avoid certain chemicals

Commercial shampoos contain multiple damaging chemicals which have been linked to skin irritation and dangerous problems such as cancer, like benzyl benzoate, sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens. If you want healthy hair, a great alternative is to opt for shampoos made with natural and organic ingredients, since they cleanse it and avoid the damaging effects of commercial shampoos.

You can also create your own shampoo by looking up recipes online. Many of these contain ingredients which are easy to find, such as baking soda, avocado, oils, mayonnaise, sandalwood, and other items you can get at your local store.

Tip for healthy hair #1: Eat properly

It’s not a secret that the things you eat determine how healthy your body is and how it looks. For great, healthy hair, consider eating food with a good amount of proteins, iron, vitamin A and E, like leafy greens, cereals, beans and dried fruits. Also, consider taking supplements of Vitamin D and multivitamins, as well as consuming water regularly.

A healthy diet is a must for beautiful skin and hair, so make sure you avoid processed and fast foods, and add healthier choices to your menu.
