We’re halfway through 2014, and only days away from the start of the summer season, and to celebrate we take a look back at the celebrities who have inspired us with their boldness or elegance during the last few years. Although Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly will always be timeless icons of style, here’s our list of the top 5 modern fashion icons who you must know!
Modern fashion icon #5: Lady Gaga
Known for her edgy and sometimes controversial choices, Stefani Germanotta, also known as “Lady Gaga”, infused life and boldness to pop culture through some eccentric stylistic choices which have inspired numerous imitators and fans. The singer also reunited a large team of artists under the name of House of Gaga, managing to combine different creative inspirations with pop-art.
She was named Best Dressed by Vogue Magazine in 2010, and has recently collaborated with designer Donatella Versace as her muse and friend for her Fall/Winter 2014 collection.
Modern fashion icon #4: Emma Watson
The youngest member of our list, Emma is better known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter movie franchise. However, after the movies were done, Watson has continued to work in several films, as well as managing to graduate from Brown University with a degree in English literature. This young star is known for being a fashion lover, and almost always making it to the lists of “best dressed” in all the events in which she appears.
The actress has modelled for several designers and fashion brands, as well as receiving the Style Icon award from Elle Magazine in 2011. She also collaborated with the brand People Tree for a spring clothing collection, and has expressed her interest in fashion design.

This gorgeous Australian actress is not only one of the most revered artists of her generation, but also an icon of beauty and sophistication. Her style is known for being simple yet extremely elegant, and she’s donned couture designs by brands such as Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Armani, Prada, L’Wren Scott, and many others.
She was part of one of the most popular Chanel N° 5 campaigns, and in recent years she was chosen for incarnating the timeless beauty of Grace Kelly in the film Grace of Monaco.
Modern fashion icon #2: Sarah Jessica Parker
Best known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the hit TV show Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker embodied a fashion-lover and promptly became one after the show was cancelled. Since then, she has collaborated with some of the top fashion brands of the world, and has been part of many fashion events. Admired by many, she is now considered one of the top fashion icons of current years.
She’s released several fragrances, designed accessories and clothes, and on February 2014 she launched her own footwear line.
Modern fashion icon #1: Michelle Obama
Since President Barack Obama entered the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama has won the heart of many females with her hard work and impeccable sense of style. She’s known for being a patron for many fashion design companies, as well as launching the career of young designer Jason Wu, who created the gowns she wore during Obama’s first and second inaugurations.
She has been in the lists of “best dressed” personalities since 2006, and she’s been recognized in major fashion publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair for her elegance.
